Programme Profile 

Te Pūtaketanga o te Reo is intended for learners who have an intermediate level understanding of, and ability in the use of, te reo. It is also intended for those who have a desire to contribute positively to the development of te reo kia tika, te reo kia rere and te reo kia Māori, or have a personal and/or professional interest in te reo Māori.

Who is the programme for? 

This programme provides an opportunity for people to learn te reo Māori in a safe and supported learning environment based upon the legacy of ngā mātua tupuna. Tikanga Māori is integrated throughout the programme in a manner that is conducive to enhance learning; to provide meaning; to create understanding and awareness; and above all to respectful application. 

With a growing iwi focus on language revitalisation activity, graduates will be able to contribute to whānau, hapū, iwi, and hapori Māori by preparing the whare and/or marae for hui, kaiwaiata, working in the marae kitchen and dining room, role-model the use of te reo amongst whānau and hapū in a range of familiar and some fewer familiar settings. Graduates will also have the skills and knowledge to undertake employment in several Māori mediums. 

TWoA Programme Aims & Outcomes 

To provide ākonga with the knowledge and skills to converse in te reo Māori at an advanced intermediate level.  

  • To provide ākonga with the opportunity to communicate independently in te reo Māori in familiar, and some fewer familiar situations.  
  • To provide ākonga with the opportunity to communicate with fluency and increasing flexibility in everyday whānau, marae, social/community, workplace and/or academic contexts, and in broader aspects of te ao Māori.  
  • To promote and encourage the use of te reo Māori as the language of choice.  
  • To increase and nurture knowledge of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori.  
  • To help ākonga gain confidence and competence in te reo Māori with a strong focus on kōrerorero.  
  • To provide ākonga with the skills to participate and understand Māori protocols and practices.  
  • To contribute positively to the development of te reo kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori or have a personal and/or professional interest in te reo Māori.
  • To provide a pathway for entry to higher level qualifications either internally with TWoA or externally with other providers.  
  • To provide an employment pathway to the diverse spaces within te ao Māori.

Mana Tangata 1 

This kōnae ako introduces ākonga to greeting people and speaking about oneself and others. Ākonga will learn to use correct punctuation and common sentence constructions for familiar topics. 

Mana Whenua 1 

This kōnae ako will allow the ākonga to recognise and respond to a wide variety of topics relating to whānau. Ākonga will then be able to grasp the main ideas of texts and identify relevant vocabulary and understand a variety of questions. 

Mana Ao Tūroa 1 

This kōnae ako will look at current, past, and future events. Ākonga are then given the opportunity to discuss and understand these topics at length. Ākonga will recognise and understand the tense in speech and identify new vocabulary within context. 

Mana Reo 1 

This kōnae ako will give ākonga an opportunity to comprehend text on given topics. Ākonga will be able to use language related to a domain including kīwaha/whakataukī and relevant vocabulary. 

Mana Tangata 2 

This kōnae ako will give ākonga the opportunity to ask and answer simple questions using common sentence constructions and recognise and respond to sentences and simple phrases about people. 

Mana Whenua 2 

This kōnae ako will give ākonga an opportunity to compose short passages and use relevant sentence structures and vocabulary relating to whānau. Ākonga will be able to discuss familiar topics with spontaneity. 

Mana Ao Tūroa 2 

This kōnae ako will look at various types of hui. Ākonga are then given the opportunity to write text relevant to a chosen hui. Ākonga will learn about relevant whakataukī/kīwaha and use passive and negative sentences. 

Mana Reo 2 

This kōnae ako will give the ākonga opportunity to use extensive sentences, language patterns and vocabulary. This will enable ākonga to write effectively using a chosen genre and apply basic rangahau skills to articulate a range of ideas.

Employment Pathway 

Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to participate in the promotion of te reo amongst whānau, hapū, iwi and community.

Graduates will have an intermediate level understanding and awareness of te reo that can be utilised to support and complement current skills and knowledge in their area of employment, in the public and private sectors. 

This qualification provides a pathway for graduates to develop capability and capacity to, enrich te reo for whānau, hapū iwi and community for current and future generations. 

Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to participate in the maintenance of te reo amongst whānau, hapū, iwi and community. 

Graduates will have an advanced-intermediate level of understanding and awareness of te reo that can be utilised to support and complement current skills and knowledge in their area of employment, in the public and private sectors. 

This qualification provides a pathway for graduates to develop capability to maintain the worth of te reo and enrich mātauranga Māori taonga tuku iho for whānau, hapū, iwi and community for current and future generations. Contribution to kāinga, marae, hapori in cultural roles may include the following: · support and engage in kaupapa Māori as intermediate level reo speakers.

Eligibility to apply 

Ākonga must be at least 16 years of age (unless an exemption from attending school has been granted) at the commencement of the programme. An exemption from attending school may be granted by a designated officer under the Education and Training Act 2020 (Section 38), or by the Secretary of Education (Section 39). 

Ākonga must be: 

  1. A New Zealand citizen (which includes citizens of the Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau) 
  2. A New Zealand resident currently living in New Zealand. 
  3. An Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident, currently residing in New Zealand. 

Ākonga may only enrol in an additional part-time programme if the academic workload has been considered achievable (as determined by the Takiwā Academic Committee), and the additional enrolment does not exceed EFTS limits in accordance with TEC Funding Conditions. 

Programme-specific Entry Criteria 

Ākonga must meet the following programme-specific requirements:  

  • Have successfully completed a te reo Māori qualification at level 2; OR  
  • Demonstrate existing te reo skill and knowledge at level 2; AND  
  • Attend an interview or information hui with a kaimahi.

This qualification provides a pathway for those seeking to develop their knowledge and skills in te reo.
